Still Singing

by Lakisha Cunningham, September 14, 2020

One of my favorite highlights of 2020 was last night's Verzuz with Patti Labelle and Glady's Knight.  There is something magical about watching true raw talent. It's 24 hours later and I'm still reading tweets to see if people were as happy as I was. I watched it from the beginning to the end. The best part...wait for it......they actually had on clothes.

These artists these days don't know if people like them or their butt cheeks. They are entertainers but they don't have voices like the greats. I was sitting there thinking when I'm my grandma's age I will have WAP to reminisce about. I don't know at 80 if those are going to be my lyrics of choice. I'm not going to be dropping anything at that point and I'm pretty sure that I won't have Megan Thee Stallion knees. Truth be told, I don't have those knees now. There tends to be a lot of popping as I move around these days.

Now with all of that being said, Patti knows she is a special type of extra. Lol. I saw that she and her husband divorced after almost 3 decades and I can only imagine that he had taken all he could. Imagine having to deal with that every day. No sir, I don't blame you at all. Gladys came ready to sing and you can tell that is what she loved to do and we loved watching her do it. When Dionne came out and I saw those three women standing together, I teared up.  Those three standing there was symbolic of so much. The era in which they produced their music, not only were they women but they were also black. Yet, they accomplished so much. It was truly phenomenal.

I can almost guarantee that you won't see me on a music program one day singing any of my hits in my old age but I do hope that I leave a legacy that gives someone something to smile about. I applaud those ladies and I hope to hold on to this euphoria for a few more days.
